Assignment Materclass 1: Sources and Notes: Elite search skills for finding sources In-Person

Does a good academic standard mean writing in a complicated way or using lots of big words or scientific language? What about reading? Where and how do you find useful sources to use in your assignments?

If these are questions that you have thought about or struggled to find answers to, then these upcoming workshops run by the Academic Achievement Team and Academic Librarian will be of use to you.

Running between the 30th April to 2nd May from 10am - 11.30am, these three workshops will help demystify these questions and will provide answers that will leave students with a good understanding of searching for sources, note-taking, paraphrasing, synthesising sources, addressing assignment structures and more.

Have you ever attempted a search using the library database, only to find that the results are in the thousands? it can be overwhelming knowing where to begin in this instance. This first of three workshops will focus on developing skills such as Boolean searches to help you find suitable sources. It will also offer useful tips about note taking and how to make the best of the materials you read and how being organised when recording that information will serve well when it comes to putting the information into your assignment.

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

  • Identify useful sources/know how to refine your searches using the Boolean technique
  • Understand paraphrasing, how to synthesise your sources and under the function of sections of assignments/disseratations/reports
  • produce work knowing when you need to demonstrate criticality or use descriptiveness

Please note that if you have a summary of adjustments (SOA) that would have an impact on the accessibility of this session and you require us to make any adjustments, please email us the details of what you require to AATeam@roehampton.ac.uk
